The Oscar-winning actress Shirley MacLaine will join season 3 of the awarded drama series Downton Abbey as Martha Levinson, Lady Grantham’s mother and is expected to a brilliant combatant to go head-to-head with Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Dame Maggie Smith. The World War I may have just ended but the fight in the castle is just about to start.
Shirley MacLaine is an admired and successful actress who must bring some more of that dry humour to the drama. She won the Academy award for her role in Terms of Endearment.
The next season is to start being filmed in Februart and to be shown in September. I’m sure the series fans will be just counting the days until it starts.

Half a century ago James Bond roared onto our screens in a not particularly auspicious fashion. Driving a sporty little Sunbeam Alpine in Dr No, he struggled to outrun a 1930s Buick LaSalle hearse on a winding Jamaican road. But the image of 007 at the wheel – whether it was of a car, speedboat or plane – was born and is undoubtedly well worthy of commemoration.
To celebrate this half a century, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire opened its Bond in Motion exhibition this week. Featuring 50 original vehicles from the 22 films so far, it’s claimed to be the largest gathering of James Bond vehicles in the world.
Of course the most memorable is the silver Aston Martin DB5. It made its debut in 1964′s Goldfinger and went on to become arguably the most famous movie car of all time courtesy of the bad guy-beating arsenal within those classic curves. Two are on show, with working gadgets. That aside, if you struggle to remember the vehicles Commander Bond, and as importantly the forces of evil he was combating have had at their disposal, a visit to Beaulieu should get your memory sparking.
Beaulieu’s Margaret Rowles said: “We knew how many exhibits we wanted and so we went to [Bond makers] Eon Productions and the Ian Fleming Foundation to source them. We were after a good mix of hero and villain vehicles and we’ve ended up with everything from a Tuk Tuk to an Aston Martin DBS.”
Of particular note is the Ford Mustang Mach I which is making its first public appearance since Bond put it on two wheels to navigate a narrow alleyway and evade the police who were chasing him in the 1971 filmDiamonds are Forever. Another debutant is the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II that the villainous Valentin Zukovsky has in the World is Not Enough. From the same movie, commercial pressure had pushed Bond producers towards BMW. After flirting with a puny Z3 in GoldenEye 007 ends up with a Z8 sports car. In the following film, Tomorrow Never Dies, that same relationship saw our hero driving a 750iL. But even the car’s ability to be operated via remote control from the back seat and placing it on a podium in Beaulieu struggles to make it look any more dramatic than a used Beemer…
Far more in keeping is Wet Nellie, the Lotus Esprit that causes the holidaymaker to look quizzically at his drink as Roger Moore drove it out of the Sardinian sea in The Spy Who Loved Me. Gadget fiends will be equally entranced by the Die Another Day baddie Zao’s bright green Jaguar XKR complete with grille-mounted machine guns, a rear-mounted Gatling gun and boot-mounted mortars.
For comedic value there’s the Citroën 2CV that Bond used to escape from Jaws in For Your Eyes Only and the Renault 11 taxi complete with missing roof from A View to a Kill. Perhaps the most compelling of the cars was run by Bond’s nemesis, Auric Goldfinger. It’s the beautiful 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III driven by Goldfinger’s henchman and chauffeur Oddjob.
But this is a lot more than just a car exhibition. There are underwater spear gun vehicles, escape modules and various motorbikes as well as the Little Nellie autogiro which is a cross between an aircraft and helicopter. In 1967′s You Only Live Twice Q somehow assembles this from four suitcases (in alligator skin, naturally), which are also on display. The autogiro does actually fly, as does the Acrostar mini jet that Bond pilots in Octopussy after retrieving it from a horsebox, folding out the wings and taking off.
And the 1961 Sunbeam Alpine that started it all? According to Beaulieu, no one knows where it is. “It was hired from a lady on the island for Dr Noand then returned to her. At the time, no one realised how significant it was going to become,” Ms Rowles said.

A manuscript possibly written by Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper is to be published worldwide.
The document was unearthed at the Montacute TV and Radio museum, Somerset, in October 2009 among the possessions of children’s author SG Hulme Beaman.
It is thought to have been written in the 1920s and is entitled The Autobiography of James Carnac.
Ripper historian Paul Begg has read the whole manuscript and said it could not be dismissed as a piece of fiction as “you find all sorts of questions and lots of niggles” about its content and provenance.
The manuscript is the first time the name James Carnac has been linked to Jack the Ripper – although no public records have yet confirmed whether Carnac existed.
Other suspects have been put forward in the past by Ripper historians, but to date his true identity has never been discovered.
To have a taste of how an Autumn of Terror in 1888 can still chill to the bone to this very day just join the 2 1/2 hour Jack the Ripper Tour.

Millions of fans of the BBC’s new ‘Sherlock’ now have a chance to rent a little piece of the programme for themselves. The flat above the Speedy’s cafe, which serves as the exterior shot for Holmes and Watson’s ‘Baker Street’ lodgings, is on the market for £330 per week.
Though the interior scenes were shot elsewhere, the distinctive red awning above the property on Gower Street, near Euston in North London, features throughout, as Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) come and go on their adventures. Ironically Baker Street, the address given by Arthur Conan Doyle in the original stories, was deemed to have too much Holmes-related signage to be viable.
Speedy’s cafe itself was the setting for one of the climactic scenes of the first episode of the new series. At the end of ‘A Scandal In Belgravia’ it was here that Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother, played by series co-creator Mark Gatiss, explained to Watson that Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), Sherlock’s bete noire, had been killed.
Since its appearance in the very first episode of the programme’s first series, the cafe has become a tourist attraction, with fans from all over the world coming to pay homage.
As well as a spacious double bedroom, the flat features a living room and separate kitchen. It’s within a short walk of distance of Bloomsbury, the British Museum, University College London and Regent’s Park. The estate agent’s listing gives no mention of whether it will give you preternatural observational powers, a doting landlady or a network of homeless friends.

Nine years after the demise of Inspector Morse the show is set to return following a one off special about his young detective days that set a ratings record of 6.5million viewers for a one-off drama.
Endeavour, a prequel to the original series, starred Shaun Evans in the role originally played by John Thaw.
Now ITV hope to make more of the Endeavour specials and are not ruling out a series. To top it all Shaun has won the blessing of the late John Thaw’s family. John’s daughter Abigail, who herself appeared in Monday’s drama, said: “I was quite nervous coming in for my scene but Sean made me feel extremely welcome.
“Being the daughter of the original Morse, I could have been a rather boring pain in the backside for him. But Shaun was just so nice.”
And she liked touches of her father’s characterisation of world-weary Morse being in the script.
Abigail added: “The echo of the old Morse provided a lovely, knowing nod to the fans. It made us cry when the scene was complete.”

In a recent interview, James Bond star Daniel Craig admitted he almost quit as James Bond. The actor who also stars in the remake of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ says he considered walking away due to lengthy delays due to MGM suffering from financial problems.
However fortunes changed for both MGM and Daniel Craig as he has now restarted work on Bond 23 ‘Skyfall’ with director Sam Mendes. He said “There was that long period where Bond maybe wasn’t happening. I’d got it into my head that if it went another two years on top of the two-year gap we’d already had, then they should probably find someone else. And I should think about getting on with things.
However, Craig also said he had “no desire to escape the role” now and said that Bond fans awaiting the release of Skyfall will be in for a real spectacular.
