Today sees the release of a new DVD based on the 7/7 bombings that took place in 2005. Starring Brenda Blethyn amd Sotigui Kouyate it tells the story of a friendship which develops between two seemingly unconnected people. Both have come to London looking for their children who are still missing following the infamous bombings.
Although they come from different religious backgrounds – Ousmane is an African Muslim living in France and Elizabeth is a white Christian living in Guernsey, they share the same hope of finding their children alive. Putting aside their cultural differences, they give each other the strength to continue the search and maintain their faith in humanity.
The film itself is a quiet, sombre experience which accurately paints a picture and sense of feeling of the fear and shock that surrounded the London bombings 5 summers ago. I remember it very well and tried to empathise what it must have been like not knowing if my loved ones had been unlucky enough to have been one of the victims on that day. The film isnt a feel good film but a charming picture about how tragedy can bring people together and bring humanity out of a situation which arose from hatred and ignorance. In my opinion definitely worth watching.
