Famous London Landmarks and Their Movies

Famous London Landmarks and Their Movies

When it comes to film locations in the UK, there’s none more spectacular than London. All of its historic landmarks, recognisable across the globe, make it a top choice amongst Hollywood blockbusters and big budget British movies like James Bond and Harry Potter. Here are some of London’s landmarks and a few of the famous scenes that feature them:

Big Ben
Big Ben is arguably the most iconic landmark in London and has been featured in countless movies, animations and TV shows. Most memorable perhaps are those movies where characters are seen scaling Big Ben, such as when Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan’s characters hang from the clock face after a sword fight in Shanghai Knights. Another famous Big Ben scene, for Dr Who fans at least, is when Big Ben is destroyed (in the series one episode “Aliens of London”) by a spacecraft crashing through it and landing in the Thames.

The London Eye
Less than half a mile walk from Big Ben is The London Eye which features as a backdrop to numerous movies and hit TV shows, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where it’s the background to a Wizard Chase scene. But it has also been used as a location in movies such as in Wimbledon when lead actors Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany film a scene in a capsule.

Most memorably are the scenes when The Eye features as a prop, such as in Doctor Who (in the 2005 episode “Rose”) when it was used as a control device for the Nestene Consciousness. Or in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer when a whirlpool created by the Silver Surfer forces the team to prevent The Eye from falling into the Thames.

Tower of London
Around half an hour from The Eye by tube is the Tower of London which has been featured in numerous films dating back to early cinema, but for famous scenes from more recent years look again to Dr Who. The historic landmark has been used three times, lastly in the 2012 episode “The Power of Three” when the UNIT headquarters are under the Tower of London.

For a famous movie scene from the last decade imagine Rowan Atkinson as Johnny English arriving at the Tower of London to guard the Crown Jewels.

Greenwich Park
Greenwich Park is a little way out from Central London but it is well worth a visit for film fans. It has been used in many period dramas based on classic novels, perhaps most famously in the 1995 version of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, which starred Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson. But it’s been the backdrop to movies from various genres from crime thriller Layer Cake to rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral.

London’s Markets
A half an hour tube ride apart, London’s markets are a must-see for fans of romantic comedies. Portobello Market can be found on Portobello Road which cuts through the heart of Notting Hill; hence it’s famous amongst fans of Hugh Grant. Here you can find that infamous blue door and the travel bookshop.

Borough Market is another world-famous market thanks to numerous British movies. Popular with food-lovers and film fans alike, it was featured in Bridget Jones’s Diary, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Across London you’ll find settings from famous movies and hit TV shows. Remember to look at these in a new light next time you visit London, but don’t forget to bring your walking shoes!
