BBC’s Miniseries “Ripper Street” – Jack the Ripper

The BBC’s eight part miniseries Ripper Street (which I can not wait to see) has begun filming in various locations in Dublin.

Created by Richard Warlow (Waking the Dead) and starring Matthew Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice, Frost/Nixon), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) and Adam Rothenberg (House).

Element Pictures is producing Ripper Street locally. Dublin’s Clancy Quays will double for the East End of London in the late 19th Century, partly because the producers felt nothing currently available in modern

London was suitable. The 19-week shoot is due to employ nearly 300 cast and crew.

Ripper Street will be a new drama set in the East End of London in 1889, during the aftermath of the “Ripper” murders. The action centres around the notorious H Division – the police precinct from hell – which is charged with keeping order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel.

It will explore the lives of characters trying to recover from the Ripper’s legacy, from crimes that have not only irretrievably altered their lives, but the very fabric of their city.

‘Jack the Ripper’ manuscript to be published worldwide

Manuscript extract A manuscript possibly written by Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper is to be published worldwide.

The document was unearthed at the Montacute TV and Radio museum, Somerset, in October 2009 among the possessions of children’s author SG Hulme Beaman.

It is thought to have been written in the 1920s and is entitled The Autobiography of James Carnac.

Ripper historian Paul Begg has read the whole manuscript and said it could not be dismissed as a piece of fiction as “you find all sorts of questions and lots of niggles” about its content and provenance.

The manuscript is the first time the name James Carnac has been linked to Jack the Ripper – although no public records have yet confirmed whether Carnac existed.

Other suspects have been put forward in the past by Ripper historians, but to date his true identity has never been discovered.

Will the true identity of Jack the Ripper be disclosed?

A legal case is currently being fought out which could have huge implications for the infamous Jack the Ripper story. Ripperologist Trevor Marriott is fighting Scotland Yard in court to have its 123 year old Ripper case files opened and potentially giving modern day investigators a huge amount of information as to the real identity of the killer.

The argument posed by Scotland Yard is that by disclosing the details of the four ledgers currently under lock and key would undermine the system they rely on which enables informants to disclose information with absolute anonymity. If Trevor Marriott wins the case it will be a victory for Ripperologists who have been coming up with numerous theories for who they think the killer is over the years, but it will also be a blow to the confidence of a potential informant who could help with police enquiries.

The case doesnt look to be resolved until the latter part of 2011 but if it does go the way of Trevor Marriott and we get closer to finding out who Jack the Ripper really was, what will Ripperologists argue about in future? A cottage industry has been built around the gruesome story of what happened in the Autum of 1888 in London’s East End – Jack the Ripper walking tours, books and crime conferences have contributed to making this case one of the most famous of all time.
