Discover the spectacular landscapes and filming locations of All Creatures Great and Small on this full-day tour through the Yorkshire Dales.
Departing from York, you’ll travel into the countryside that has become inseparably linked with James Herriot and the popular Channel 5 television series. Along the way, experience rolling green hills, traditional dry-stone walls, dramatic limestone scenery, historic ruins and some of Yorkshire’s most picturesque villages.
Your first stop is Grassington, which appears on screen as the fictional village of Darrowby. Explore its attractive Market Square and see familiar locations featured throughout the series, with time to visit the village’s independent shops and cafés.
The tour then ventures deeper into the Yorkshire Dales, travelling through Wharfedale and across Beggarman’s Pass, the highest road in the Dales. Along this scenic route, you’ll pass several memorable filming locations, including St Michael and All Angels Church in Hubberholme, used for James and Helen’s wedding, and Yockenthwaite Farm, which appears as the Alderson family farm.
After descending into Wensleydale, you’ll stop in Hawes, known as the “Capital of the Dales”. Enjoy free time for lunch, explore the town or visit the famous Wensleydale Creamery and sample the cheese for which the area is renowned.
In the afternoon, visit the beautiful Aysgarth Falls, also known for appearing in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, before continuing to the magnificent Bolton Castle. This imposing 14th-century fortress provides another connection to the world of James Herriot, as well as panoramic views across Wensleydale.
Throughout the day, your knowledgeable guide will share stories about the television series, its filming locations and the landscapes that inspired James Herriot’s much-loved tales. The tour concludes with a scenic journey back to York.
