28/09/2026The Happy Valley filming locations are in and around Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, the home turf of writer Sally Wainwright (Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack, Scott and Bailey, At Home with the Braithwaites, Riot Women).
The series first aired in 2014 and quickly became must-see TV thanks to its gritty drama and the complex, charismatic Sgt Catherine Cawood, played by the award-winning Sarah Lancashire. A no-nonsense Yorkshire copper, Catherine won over viewers from the very first episode. So did the stunning landscape. With its distinctive cobbled streets and canal framed by steep green hillsides, woodland and dramatic heather-clad moors, the scene was set as soon as the opening credits rolled.
Most of the Happy Valley filming locations in Hebden Bridge are within a short walk of the railway station, so it’s easy to follow in Catherine Cawood’s footsteps yourself. Use this guide to explore the town at your own pace, with a map link for each location along the way.
Catherine’s home is in Hebden Bridge, a delightful former mill town once named “the 4th funkiest town in the world” by British Airways’ High Life magazine.
The town quickly established itself as a character in its own right. Even though the explosive finale aired in 2023, it still attracts fans from all over the world. Here are the Happy Valley filming locations you can easily explore for yourself.
Location: Station Road, Hebden Bridge

If you arrive in Hebden Bridge by train, you’ll be immersed in Happy Valley plotlines as soon as you step onto the platform at this beautiful Victorian station, which opened in 1840.
This is where Catherine’s grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) sets off to secretly watch his father appear in court in Leeds. His father is, of course, Tommy Lee Royce (superbly played by James Norton), the series’ psychopathic villain and Catherine’s nemesis. The crew actually filmed the court scenes at the former Bolton Magistrates’ Court.

Location: Hebden Bridge town centre

The picturesque canal runs through the centre of Hebden Bridge and features in the dramatic finale of the first series. Tommy entices Ryan to visit him on a canal barge he has broken into, setting up a violent confrontation with Catherine.
The crew actually filmed these scenes further along the towpath at Luddenden Foot, three miles down the A646 towards Halifax. Sally Wainwright knew it would be quiet there, which helped protect the secrecy surrounding the final plotline from members of the public watching the filming.

A café at the time of filming, Origano is now an Italian restaurant and is still recognisable both inside and out. This is where Clare (Siobhan Finneran) meets up with Catherine’s son Daniel (Karl Davies). Clare inadvisedly tells him that his parents are sleeping together despite being divorced, leading to Daniel’s strained relationship with them.

Behind the scenes
This attractive (and fragrant!) shop is where Sarah Lancashire commissioned a limited edition gift candle for the cast and crew to mark the end of the series. The shop later sold the candle to the public for a time, raising £10,000 for the local charity Overgate Hospice.

Location: 13 Hangingroyd Road, Hebden Bridge

After his row with Catherine over visiting Tommy Lee Royce, Ryan leaves home to live with his aunt Clare and her partner Neil (Con O’Neill). We see Catherine walking up the lane from Market Street in the dark to speak to him
She stands at the doorway in her black puffa coat and they have an emotional conversation, punctuated by Catherine asking Ryan what he’s having for his tea. It’s a very good example of Wainwright capturing the pragmatic nature of Calder Valley residents and their dry sense of humour, which runs throughout the series.

Catherine and Ryan walk along the riverside of Hebden Water, which runs through the centre of the town next to the Rochdale Canal. They pass under the old packhorse bridge, which was built when the trading route between Halifax and Burnley crossed the river as the weaving and cotton trades grew.
Look out too for the Wavy Steps, a well-known local landmark beside the river on Bridgegate, which also give their name to the cosy riverside bar here.
Catherine is unhappy with Ryan at this point. The headteacher has just called her in to discuss his poor behaviour. She’s increasingly concerned that he will grow up to be as disturbed and, in her mind, as evil as his father. She holds Tommy Lee responsible for the death by suicide of her daughter Becky, Ryan’s mum.
Bridgegate is the pedestrianised shopping area and main social hub of the town, lined with independent shops and cafés. The town is proud of its reputation as a welcoming place that celebrates all sections of the community, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation.
The attractive cobbled street leads to St George’s Square, where Catherine and Ann (Charlie Murphy) head for a night out at a restaurant in Bridge Mill. The mill’s distinctive chimney is a landmark in the town centre. The sign above the entrance read “Angyliki” for filming, but it’s actually a shop and café called Innovation. You can clearly see the old hardware shop Bonsall’s in the background. It’s now a holiday rental property.

Location: St George’s Street, Hebden Bridge
Opposite the impressive Victorian Town Hall, with its original rates office window signs, is the car park where Ann suffers after a drinking binge and is sick under a tree while a sympathetic Catherine looks on.
The old hardware shop Bonsall’s can clearly be seen in the background, and is now a holiday rental property.

Location: off Hangingroyd Lane, at the junction with Regent Street
Seen in: Series 3, Episode 6 (2023)
Now a new housing development, this plot of land was once the car park where Tommy Lee Royce dumps the car he stole after his fight with the gangsters. He then heads further up the street to break into Catherine’s house.
At the end of the finale, Clare comforts Catherine here after her dramatic final showdown with Tommy Lee Royce. Police cars and an ambulance arrive at the scene.
Location: 29 Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge

The most popular Hebden Bridge location is the home of the series’ icon, Catherine Cawood. This impressive stone terraced house has a lean-to conservatory at the rear, at the end of the cobbled street Linden Place.
This is where Clare and Catherine appear in several scenes smoking and having in-depth talks, and where Ryan plays football. Catherine’s neighbour Winnie lives opposite the conservatory at 5 Linden Place, which is accessible to the public and easily recognisable. The red exterior wall of the conservatory has since been repainted cream.
At the front of the property, the door was painted from green to white between series 1 and 3. Shrubs now hide the lower window where Tommy Lee Royce breaks in. That’s understandable, as this is a private home that the BBC hired for filming.
The crew filmed many scenes inside the house across the whole series. However, they shot the final confrontation between Catherine and Tommy Lee on a recreated kitchen set. This was due to fire safety concerns and a desire to keep the finale secret.

The Nisa store features prominently across the series and is where Clare gets reacquainted with Neil. It’s also where Tommy Lee approaches Ryan to tell him he’s his father, wearing a disguise he bought at a charity shop in Sowerby Bridge.
You can clearly see the ornate stonework and green handrails at the doorway as he talks to Ryan. Ryan’s bike is propped against the wall outside.
The scene where Catherine later confronts Neil about helping Ryan visit his dad was filmed inside the shop. Several staff members featured as extras, as did many locals throughout the series. Sarah Lancashire and the rest of the cast became familiar faces in town and were always friendly and popular, making time to chat to fans and shopkeepers. The shop has had a new frontage fitted since filming took place.

Tommy Lee Royce gets off the bus from Sowerby Bridge at the stop in front of the park, on his mission to meet Ryan in series 1. Carrying a copy of War and Peace, he’s seen crossing the road to go and find him.

Location: Heptonstall village

The new graveyard is clearly signposted at the junction of Church Street and Back Lane. Throughout the series, it’s the location of the grave of Catherine’s daughter, Becky Cawood. It’s also where the story ends, with Catherine saying an emotional goodbye to the valley as she sets off on her travels to begin her retirement.
The graveyard is also the final resting place of Sylvia Plath, the famous American poet and wife of the locally born Poet Laureate Ted Hughes. In one scene, Ryan asks Catherine about Plath’s grave while they’re visiting Becky’s, and points out the pens and mementos that fans often leave there.

Hebden Bridge may be the heart of Happy Valley, but filming stretched across Calderdale and even over the Pennines into Lancashire. Here are some of the other locations worth knowing about.
Location: former Halifax Swimming Baths, Skircoat Road, Halifax
Seen in: Series 2 and 3
Catherine’s police station in Halifax is actually the town’s former swimming pool. It closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, and in June 2026 work started on its demolition after Calderdale Council decided the 1960s building was beyond repair.
A disused former police station in Sowerby Bridge was used in the first series. After the council approved plans to redevelop that building in 2019, the series moved Catherine to the police HQ in Halifax.

Location: 28 Corporation Street, Bolton
Seen in: Series 3
One of the most dramatic and intense scenes of the series takes place in a café, as Catherine confronts Clare about secretly helping Ryan visit Tommy Lee Royce in prison.
In the story, the café is in Sheffield near the prison. In reality, the crew filmed the prison street scenes near HMP Wakefield and the interior shots at HMP Shrewsbury. The location manager chose this Bolton café because it was close to the former Bolton Magistrates’ Court, which plays the Leeds court Tommy makes his daring escape from.
The café owners say visitor numbers have surged since the series ended, with many fans wanting to sit at the very table where the highly charged meeting took place.

Location: Albert Street, Elland

Chemist Faisal Bhatti (Amit Shah) sells stolen prescription drugs from Brooksbank Pharmacy. In exterior shots, the pharmacy is an end-of-terrace house on Albert Street.
Sally Wainwright’s grandfather lived on this street, and series producer Jessica Taylor has explained that Sally knows her locations well and writes each scene with the place in mind. As she put it: “The landscape becomes part of the character.”

Location: Holdsworth Road, Holdsworth, Halifax, HX2 9TG

This historic Jacobean manor was the location for a meeting between Catherine’s ex-husband Richard and drugs boss Darius Knezevic (Alec Secareanu). Now an upmarket hotel, it frequently hosted the cast during series two and three.
It has welcomed plenty of other famous guests too, from The Beatles in the 1960s to Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi during the recent filming of Wuthering Heights. It also featured in Sally Wainwright’s Last Tango in Halifax.

On the road leading to Sowerby Bridge station, you’ll find the bridge from which DS John Wadsworth (Kevin Doyle) jumps to his death. His life unravels after he murders his lover Vicky (Amelia Bullmore), who had been blackmailing him.

Location: Stones Drive, Ripponden
Seen in: Series 3
The production chose this smart housing estate for Faisal and Rob’s homes because the plot needed the two men to live near each other. Across the series, both men’s nefarious deeds catch up with them.
Teacher Rob (Mark Stanley) abuses his wife Joanna (Mollie Winnard) and his pupils, while chemist Faisal supplies Joanna and others with stolen drugs at the behest of Darius Knezevic, a dangerous local gangster. Faisal’s wife and children are unaware of his wrongdoing and increasingly desperate behaviour. Rob’s young daughters, meanwhile, are disturbed by their parents’ relationship troubles and their mother’s subsequent disappearance.

Happy Valley is filmed mainly in the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, particularly in Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall, Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Ripponden. Some series 3 scenes were also filmed in Bolton, Wakefield and Shrewsbury.
Catherine’s house is on Hangingroyd Lane in Hebden Bridge, with its conservatory at the back on Linden Place. It’s a private home, so please be respectful if you visit.
Becky Cawood’s grave was filmed in the new graveyard in Heptonstall, a hilltop village just above Hebden Bridge. It’s also where Sylvia Plath is buried.
The tense café scene between Catherine and Clare was filmed at Amico Café on Corporation Street in Bolton, even though it’s set in Sheffield in the show.
Yes. Most of the Hebden Bridge locations are within a short walk of the railway station and each other, so it’s easy to explore them on foot at your own pace. Several locations are private homes, so please view them from the street and respect the residents’ privacy.
Hebden Bridge is on the Calder Valley railway line, with direct trains from Leeds and Manchester. Arriving by train is the easiest option, as the station is the first filming location on the walk.
Whether you’re a devoted fan who has watched all three series more than once or you’ve simply been drawn in by that stunning Calder Valley scenery, Hebden Bridge is well worth the trip. Arrive by train from Leeds or Manchester, pick up a coffee on Bridgegate and you’ll find yourself standing in Catherine Cawood’s world within minutes. It’s a friendly town used to welcoming fans, so do remember that several of the locations are people’s homes and enjoy them from the street.
