Where is Grantchester Filmed?

Grantchester Filming Locations

The British ITV detective crime drama Grantchester is filmed in a small village that lies on the River Cam in South Cambridgeshire.  Grantchester is a quaint village with lots of thatched cottages, a medieval Grantchester Church, and several pubs.

The drama is set in the 1950s in the village of Grantchester, Cambridgeshire in the East of England.  The series is based on The Grantchester Mysteries which are a collection of short stories written by James Runcie.  Focusing on Sidney Chambers, the vicar of a Cambridgeshire, the show first aired on the BBC in 2014.  A 7th series has yet to be announced but series 1-6 you can watch Grantchester on the ITV hub.

Church of St Mary and St Andrew

The Grade II listed Church of St Mary and St Andrew is used as a backdrop in many of the scenes:

Address: Church Ln, Whittlesford, Cambridge CB22 4NY

The Red Lion

The Red Lion is fictional but the building it is filmed in isn’t. It was actually the Windmill pub in Chipperfield.  So if you fancy a Grantchester-style pint, head yourself two to the Windmill pub which is situated near Hemel Hempstead.  It has a four-star TripAdvisor rating and sells a great selection of ales and lagers.

Bluebell Railway

The historic Cambridge train station seen in some episodes was actually Horsted Keynes which can be found in West Sussex:

Kings Parade

Kings Parade street in central Cambridge has been used to film some scenes. It is the road that runs north into Trinity Street and south into Trumpington Street:

Chatham Dockyard

The historic Chatcham Dockyard was used to film a number of London locations including the exterior of Kings Cross Station, Borough Market, and the exterior and interior of a warehouse and ropery:
